Bio
Chance Thomas is an American composer, author, and creative entrepreneur whose music has left an indelible mark on video games, film, television, animation, and virtual reality. Born in Los Angeles, California, Chance has built a career that bridges artistic innovation with commercial success. Over more than three decades, his original music has underscored some of the most beloved entertainment properties in the world and contributed to projects that have generated billions of dollars in global sales.
A pioneer in the field of game music, Chance’s scores have helped define the sound of modern interactive entertainment. He’s best known for composing music for blockbuster interactive titles such as The Lord of the Rings Online, DOTA 2, and James Cameron’s Avatar, combining orchestral richness with adaptive, player-responsive scoring techniques that have advanced the art and technology of game audio.
Chance’s work in film and television has also earned widespread recognition. He scored Columbia Pictures’ The ChubbChubbs!, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, and earned an Emmy nomination for the TV movie Lost Treasure Hunt. His music has been featured on popular television programs including Pawn Stars, The Bachelorette, and The 700 Club, showcasing his versatility across media. He is widely credited with helping secure Grammy eligibility for video game music and has been honored with over 40 entertainment industry awards and nominations.
Beyond composing, Chance has contributed to the wider creative community as an author and educator. In 2016, Routledge published his first book, Composing Music for Games, which has been adopted as a university-level textbook. The book continues to serve as a foundational resource for composers entering the video game industry.
Alongside his creative work, Chance has devoted decades to the quiet, sustained work of spiritual formation, mentoring, and ministering care. For decades, he has served in roles that required both spiritual authority and personal proximity—teaching, mentoring, counseling, and pointing people to God's help for addiction, marital fracture, vocational uncertainty, and quiet spiritual fatigue. His work has extended beyond the pulpit into classrooms, community outreach, and efforts to address material need, including direct engagement in the fight against hunger. This long ministerial arc—largely unseen but deeply formative—now informs his writing on faith, light, and human flourishing. He is currently completing a spiritual guidebook titled INVITE LIGHT, a collection of faith-centered reflections designed to encourage spiritual awakening, hope, and meaningful growth.
Thomas has traveled to more than 100 countries and territories on every continent as an explorer of the natural world, cultures, and human striving. He has become an avid photographer, alongside seeking to understand how diverse peoples reach toward divine light and understanding amid wildly different circumstances.
Chance loves family, church, community service, music, pro football, science fiction and fantasy, exploring the world, great food, and wholesome entertainment.
